This list features an allied detachment of Tempestus Scions (the grots with red berets) as well as the new Rogal Dorn Battle Tank, and a newly converted Command Squad and Lord Solar model. My Basilisk makes a return to the channel, as well as the "snotkopta" Scout Sentinels now mounted on new 80mm bases. I am so pleased with these photos that Nick was able to take, he was also so keen to snap them that I hadn't even turned them all to face the camera! What cheeky grots! I hope you enjoy these close-ups, and the battle report when it is released in a few weeks.

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijRUsUvFhIQ2l5_Y8cLD8bT3npA1HQCHimMkyebPsRXvNQ-a26x2g_DPY5gh9XDKpk8diMnS8sSFXU6zPsI7qZZw7Vx3UsUYG4BlZLxzV0SNasFQ3J7jdkJGx5G8RANObHahl0-ZuseE11jcIe3yIC0PgcKe3vV0BAmzHWQvAjY17L8k0RNsaJsWmL/s4020/P1049530.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; A funerary procession, with each of the models representing the six major orders of the sororitas, as well as the skeletal remains and preserved heart of Saint Katherine, the patron saint of the Order of Our Matured Lady. I am painting this model for my Order of the Bloody Rose faction, hence the blood red armour and dark cloaks, though the model isn't faction locked so I can use is as part of my detachment.

The model is a beast to paint, with so many sub-assemblies it felt like painting a whole squad or two at once. I had hoped the black robes (which were simple to paint) would not overwhelm the colour palette, and it was only once the final model was completed (the sister at the front with sword and shield) that I was finally happy with the whole procession and how it visually matches the rest of my army.

The most rewarding, and truthfully also most tedious, part of the model was painting the cherubs. Each wing was painted using the basecoat/wash/highlight method rather than any dry-rushing, and this meant many many thin layers of light grey and edge highlights of white to get the look I was hoping for. The same palette is used on the base, so as to frame the model, and I have used this effect across the whole army with the white/gray hair and stone bases, and it has translated well to this larger piece. I also attempted to copy the scrollwork form the box art and was very pleased with how it looks on the model, not too distracting but also rewarding a second look from a casual observer.

I am now just over the halfway point of my army painting goal, and with this model taking a little bit of a hit rules-wise in the new codex I am very happy that I had a chance to paint it before moving on to other parts of the army or buying any of the newer releases. It was a real joy to paint, and having taken around one hour per night for three weeks, I am very happy with the final result given it could have taken months trying to perfect every little detail that would surely be lost to anyone who hasn't actually attempted to paint this themselves. I used to take three months for a diorama competition entry, and very happy to have taken less than a third of that for this gaming piece. I hope this helps explain some of the steps involved in creating my custom Cadian "Grot Guard" unit, made from Blood Bowl goblins (Scarcrag Snivellers), various goblin heads as well as a lot of cadian bits and pieces. The Cadian Heavy Weapons Team sprue in particular comes with a few spare helmets but otherwise these were carefully ground out with a rotary tool. The Blood Bowl team only has two open palm hands per box, requiring the copying with green stuff. Pinning was used quite extensively to keep all the pieces together and the models will hopefully survive many many fuure games and edition changes. Good luck with your own projects!!

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh756Ry4Ezqipf1c_pcRev2BiBkqLjIMqGlsgf9a5lKs9YWKL09EgiRiIkWw7BCyyja2hWgZn0Aw95cy8QfE8rk0xURNhNaRiQkYiaqUulmR6ASKstzzx76IdQ6WTqpkXcy-rPSDcym8jA/s2048/IMG_5277.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; I also had my first win in the ITC format (after only one practice game and less than a dozen 8th Edition games) using a rather un-optimized list, built using a variety of leftover tanks and purposely purchased models kits to create the first army I am truly happy to own both in conversions, paint quality and colour scheme.

I hope to edit this and future posts with more details of the army and models but as I have spent over a year's worth of any available spare time just getting the army completed I'll leave you with a few of my favourite photos from the event. I don't think I will ever be attempting such a large and ambitious project any time soon! Thank you for all the words of encouragement from everyone online and at the event.
I've had a lot of fun painting these three tanks for my Grot Guard army, and with the trio completed I am now sitting at 1000 points and ready for the next stage of the project. I saved them for "last" as a reward for painting most of the infantry and characters, while at the same time gathering all the necessary bits and pieces from across the many boxes locked away in storage. One of these tanks I have owned since 2001 (and marks a third and final repaint) while a second I bought in 2009, and the final one was given to me by a former boss who was tidying up his shed! They are all the "old" design, and while I had enough cannons, ne turret and most of the original weapons went missing along the way. I managed to break up the most complete tank and use the sponson guns to make them "official" Astra Militarum vehicles in dimensions and weaponry despite their converted appearance.

Above you can see the difference in colours used, with my Orks receiving the garish Temple Guard blue, while the Grot Guard are pained using Lothern blue. I have also been "speed painting" the Grot Guard with each tank tanking approximately five hours, whereas the Battlewagon above took more than double that over a few weeks. On the tabletop the blue and difference in details doesn't seem to matter and it's been really rewarding painting an army so quickly and yet in a style I know I will enjoy for many years to come. The same can't be said for other quick paint jobs in the past.
The models were always intended to be used as Astra Militarum first, Ork looted vehicles second, so there is a lot of confusion whenever I post them online. I hope that once the army is all done the intent will become apparent! These have been painted using the classic base-coat, wash, highlight method that is so common to Games Workshop models (because it looks so good!) though I take great pains to block in the blue areas and leave the shaded sections in-between. I would say roughly half the paint time is just laying down the blue basecoat, but was made easier by breaking it into sections. One side of a tank could be blocked in in about an hour one evening, for example. The weathering itself was quite quick, just black chips with a quick edge highlight and brown rust streaks. I covered any boring bits with some blood splatter and then a dust of pigment powder.
Here you can see the extent of my bits box raiding, and while the hull was stripped of paint (mostly) the extra bits and pieces were just painted over after a light dusting of undercoat. A few rivets here and there were made from plasticard, and the battlewagon turret cut down to match the Leman Russ size to prevent any grumbling if I were to be accused of modelling for advantage. While it was tempting to go all out converting an Ork vehicle I wanted these to be useable in the future for any Astra Militarum armies based on my Grots.

I have been woefully behind in posting my progress pictures for my latest project, a small force of Astra Militarum "counts as" goblins, but I am here to report the project is well under way at almost one third completed after less than four months since the first test model. With the bulk of the miniatures being basic super fast to paint grots (representing conscripts) it was easy to spend a little more time on the conversions while speed painting the rest of the force.

The "big idea" for this army arose when the new goblin Blood Bowl team was released in 2017, as I thought them a perfect candidate for converting into Cadian soldiers using parts from my bits box. Combined with the Looted Wagons which had not seen any love in five years or more, it seemed the perfect way to create a unique army quickly and inexpensively given I already had an Ork colour scheme I knew and loved already.

I took the rather garish Temple Guard Blue from my Orks and replaced it with Lothern blue, a reasonable match should I use units across the two armies (Heavy Weapon Teams as kannons and so on...) but quite de-saturated which I felt suited the more military nature of the Astra Militarum models. Of course, most of these tanks had been previously looted and parts were missing, but I am doing my best to keep them subtly converted with the long term view of playing them using the loyalist codex and minimal "counts as" explanations necessary.

The real standout models so far have been my Lord Commissar (see this post for more photos) and my first conversion of a Tempestus Scion using some Arkanaut Company models from the Age of Sigmar range. I like the model so much I am saving any further conversions as a reward for rebuilding and painting three Leman Russ tanks from my bits box (which in itself is a reward for getting to the 500 point mark as once they are completed I will be at 1000 points and a second HQ choice from a playable army). I like to tell myself it has been a great use of the delayed gratification tactic to get this far, but honestly all the units have been fun to build and paint!

The whole force is still crammed into my bookshelf away from tiny hands while I renovate an old carry case, and I almost want to set up a display case, but the real reward will be getting them out for a game and hopefully tripling the amount of points by the time Armies on Parade rolls around in another three months.
The real joy of this whole project has been finally painting up some of these goofy models, emptying my bits box of some of the larger unloved pieces, all while putting some of my wacky conversion ideas and new models on the tabletop! This is definitely an army I will be gaming with and adding to for many many years...Matthew Beavishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14625156422882255312noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6124049513546273610.post-82886277737204538342018-05-12T05:59:00.003-07:002018-05-12T05:59:53.040-07:00Converted Grot Guard Commissar

This is the leader of a new project I've started since returning from a holiday with my family, as I realised I have so little hobby time at the moment I don't want to waste it on grinding through painting models I'm not excited by. He is the leader of my new Astra Militarum (Grot Guard) force, and I will be using the Blood Bowl goblins as the basis for my Cadian Grots, along with a host of looted tanks which have been gathering dust in the bits box. It's been an exciting month of looking forward to converting and painting nearly every day, especially as I will be carrying over my Ork paint scheme which I love so much already.Matthew Beavishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14625156422882255312noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6124049513546273610.post-82611593260950896472018-02-11T08:04:00.003-08:002018-02-11T08:04:44.312-08:00Completed: Kustom Mega Kannon

I am really struggling to paint the Lootas for this army (so many small details!) so I finished one of my Mek Gunz instead, just in time for another game day. I picked up five of these cheaply over the course of a few years and look forward to finishing another one soon, it was a lot of fun to paint.Matthew Beavishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14625156422882255312noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6124049513546273610.post-28964246137907635882017-12-11T09:43:00.000-08:002017-12-11T09:43:34.071-08:00Battlewagon/Taurox Conversion

Following on from my post covering the Orks I have been painting this year, I wanted to share some more photos of the Battlewagon I converted using a Taurox kit. This has always been on my "to do" list since the Taurox kit was released as I had never liked the look of the wagon and thought this would be a perfect combination.

Not an easy kit to combine, the sloping rear of the Taurox did not extend easily so I ended up using a great deal of filler to combine the two kits. I also found the grill needed extending once the roller was attached, and the plating on the front needed bulking up to match my image of a hulking battlewagon.
This was my first time using milliput, and I love it. The initial two part mix responds well to watering down and still sets quite hard once cured, allowing it to be filed and shaped with a knife. Green stuff tends to be too soft for making armour plating so I was very happy to find a good subsitute.
The model seemed to take an age to paint, and I stopped part way through because of the overwhelming amount of blue leading to boredom, though with a couple of late nights and lot of edge highlighting I was finally able to call it finished in time for a local painting competition (always a good goal to get something finished). No prizes this year, but a model I am very excited to bring to the tabletop and a great centerpiece for an army which prides itself for looting and modifying things! I've already started on some more grots in this colour scheme, and have had many people online and in person say how much they like the blue which is quite vibrant and "Saturday morning cartoon" style as one person mentioned. Definitely keen to paint more!Matthew Beavishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14625156422882255312noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6124049513546273610.post-6958499117794343002017-12-03T10:08:00.000-08:002017-12-04T21:19:38.906-08:00Orks 2017There's been plenty going on this year on the hobby front despite the arrival of twins in March. I've only had a chance to play 8th Edition 40k two or three times but have thoroughly enjoyed every game. I had sworn to myself that I would only play with painted models in the new edition, and this was the catalyst for a painting spree with my oldest army, this time in a fresh colour scheme.
Of course a new paint scheme means a "new" army colour and this time I chose Deathskulls (the clan of Orks responsible for stealing and modifying things), which also gave me a chance to finally start my Taurox/Battlewagon conversion which has been sitting in bits for many years. This is the current "centerpiece" for the army and as such I was looking forward to painting it the most.

The model I was least looking forward to painting was the Shock Attack Gun, pictured above. I had worked on the skin tone and then armour tone painting the troops, but had no idea how to approach a tabletop level glow effect. Fortunately I had about five different yellows including a fluorescent colour to experiment with, and I think it turned out appropriately garish!

The last model on the painting list was the leader, and I was equally uninspired by painting him due to the large amount of flat blue areas which required jazzing up, and the glowing force field. Thankfully I had experimented by adding a few brown rust streaks to the large blue panels on the battlewagon and they worked just as well on the smaller model to break up the large areas. Let's hope he performs well in game with a fresh coat of paint!

The "boys" were key to my painting success, as I batch painted them quite quickly and was happy enough with them to paint the rest of the army. Orks are generally fielded in large numbers so i wanted to be sure I was satisfied with their look before continuing with the rest of the army. The photos aren't the best but I don't have time this year to set up a proper lightbox, it would mean less time painting!
I was inspired by a lot of "tale of warlords" painting and collecting articles in White Dwarf and online, I'm really happy with this small starter force, and I look forward to painting more next year. Add in my existing collection and I now have a modest 1500 points of Orks painted which i am very pleased with. Bring on the next few games! Thanks for dropping by.

I finally had a chance to try out 8th Edition on a full size board this week and I really enjoyed it. Shooting and combat happen so quickly, many difficult or ponderous game mechanisms have been streamlined and I can finally play Orks and enjoy myself! I have been painting up some very bright deathskulls this summer and mounting them on the new Sector Imperialis bases in a return to "tabletop" paint schemes rather than time consuming display pieces. They looked so good I went and re-based all my kult of speed models and other painted Orks I last painted over eight years ago! (You may also be able to spot a few work-in-progress models that I look forward to sharing on the blog in future!)

Towards the end of last year I painted some Harlequins from the Death Masque box set as an antidote to all the marines I had been painting, and as a way to hopefully reinvigorate my enthusiasm for 7th Edition Warhammer 40,000 in which my Orks had fared quite poorly. Inevitably I was only part way through painting this army when the new rulebook was released and I started on another project.
Nearly a year on and I have finally taken some photos to share with you all! The first five I painted won the squad category at a local painting competition, and I look forward to revisiting this army when the new book comes out, though I am in no particular hurry to revisit these diamond patterns any time soon. It was refreshing change of pace to take my time with these models as I move toward long term army collecting rather than rushed edition-specific army.
I had such a fun time converting these guys I just wanted to try them out on the table as soon as possible, so I took them along with me to pick up the new Shadow Wars rule book (released today) which meant a furious afternoon of painting yesterday. Within three hours I was able to get these guys up to a good gaming standard, using the usual base/wash/highlight method with a few technical paints to hide imperfections. I'm so impressed with how they look given the quick paint time I may end up transferring this faster style to my Orks in the future!
Thankfully their in-game performance was better than my shaky camera skills, and I bested a small Harlequin kill team thanks to pinning, frag grenades and finishing them off in combat (while they were on the ground of course!). It was quite scary seeing how quick the harlequins moved around, I hope to try them out in game soon as well!Matthew Beavishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14625156422882255312noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6124049513546273610.post-45667393953913872572017-05-03T11:33:00.000-07:002017-05-03T11:33:18.669-07:00"Dark Mechanicus" Skitarii Kill Team Conversions

I've been behind on a few hobby projects due to recently becoming a dad to twins, but the release of "Shadow War: Armageddon" has inspired me to dust off a long forgotten project from the bits box. I split a pack of Skitarii three ways with friends when they were first released, hoping to make a go with the INQ28 side of gaming but never got further than pinning some weapon arms to cultist models and filing them for a rainy day.
With the formal re-release of the Necromunda skirmish rules, including rules for these particular models, I thought it best to seize the very limited time I have at the moment and finally pin and green stuff the remaining bits together. A quick evening or two's work in between sushing crying bubs and I am ready to dust an undercoat on these and start the painting process. There are so many details it is tempting to really take my time, but the (hopefully) shorter time for games compared to 40k means I want these out the door and gaming very soon!
The last twelve months has seen a great rise in the popularity of Horus Heresy or "30k" in my gaming group thanks to the Betrayal at Calth box set, and after dipping our toe into some of the heresy-specific missions last year we have kicked off 2017 with a campaign loosely based upon the battle at Isstvan III, using some of the rules from Forgeworld's "Betrayal" adapted to our own models and armies.

One of the key missions in the campaign was the arrival of the World Eaters Primarch Angron on the planet's surface, with he and his traitor allies desperate to wipe the loyalists that survived the virus bombings. With the loyalists in the lead so far in our campaign, the traitors were desperate for a big win and needed and appropriately inspiring model to lead their force.

Quite regularly I feel like the world's slowest painter, but with only two weeks until the big game I pulled out my still on sprue Khorne Bloodbound force and started hacking away until I had a rough approximation of pose using the Khorne Leader and a few random axes from the warriors. Adding some legion specific markings and fur from greenstuff, and an evening's painting later he was ready for battle.

Although he stands barely taller than a regular terminator he still commands enough presence on the tabletop to be a good stand in for a single game here and there, and thankfully counts as a "Games Workshop" model for the purposes of gaming at my local store. It's been a full twelve months since Bertrayal at Calth was
released and I started work on my Emperor's Children army but I'm afraid to say
that it has taken almost a year to finally find a purple colour scheme that I
am happy with. Only recently have I settled on a "final" scheme, and
only on this conversion would I consider it finished, though there is always
room for improvement...

I didn't
go all out on the details for this gaming model as I am well behind on the rest
of the army, though the gold is done in a newer "true metallic metal"
style using some tips from a recent White Dwarf. As for the purple? No washes,
no glazes, no two-brush-blending, just a little rough feathering with pink and
some edge highlighting for the details. A real joy to paint without any of the
"painters block" which usually accompanies a commander type model,
let's hope that translates well moving on to painting the rest of the army!

The model itself is based on the recent Ultramarine Herald model which was languishing in my local shop for many weeks. An
over-priced and poorly sculpted piece of nonsense (GW plastics are so amazing
these days I wonder why they bother with these special resin models? I guess my
purchase confirms they sell...) I still saw potential and enjoyed converting
this commander model using the already oversized legs and torso of the herald
to great effect. Add in some harlequin pieces for the hairdo (hello Skrillex!)
and I have a fairly reasonable conversion for my updated army list. I am
working on some Tartaros Terminators at the moment, I look forward to sharing
these with you all in the New Year!

It's been a busy summer without blogging though I have used my hobby time well, not only dipping my toe into Age of Sigmar with the release of the General's Handbook but completing a full 1000 point Death army in a little under two months! Controversy regarding the games system aside, I found once I knew how many models were required to make a small force I was quite happy to pick up a start collecting box and a couple of units to not only finish my first army in two years but try out a new game with painted models!

Although the photos aren't the best, neither is the army designed to win any painting awards. After a lot of deep thought I have found the airbrush to be my kryptonite when it comes to painting enthusiasm. I would get a whole lot of models assembled and base coated quickly then lose interest in finishing an army with rows and rows of flat colour staring back at me. As such all these models were assembled and painted one unit at a time, using brushes only, basic basing and no conversions.

Another big decision in getting these models to the table quickly was cutting down the number of painting steps and colours. I utilised a lot of washes and drybushing, and the small units and limited palette kept things moving along. You can see the standard bearer in the photo above looks slightly different as he was an early test model using glazes and feathering which I quickly abandoned as the other test models took half the time and looked even better on the tabletop! Instead of choosing three technical paints (corrosion, rust, oxide) I stuck with just the one oxide paint and I think it really matches the snow-like theme of the army and dulls down the metals quite well.

These Harbingers were from a friend's 40k chaos army and were being used as Daemon Princes in an earlier army list. After not seeing them on the table for quite a while due to a list change I was thrilled that he was happy for me to me to paint them up for my new Death Army. We have quite a history of swapping models back and forth, and he warned me the main issue he had with them was painting the wings - he wasn't lying! I think it took nearly four episodes of The Walking Dead to get these guys finished.

Mannfred was my first foray into large scale fantasy models from GW, and it was quite intricate to put together! My one learning experience was gluing sections and allowing them to set overnight before continuing with the model, and I used this technique when assembling the skeletons as well. Unlike a lot of larger 40k models I found this one did not need pinning as a lot of the sub-sections had generous gluing points which were quite strong. The model does bounce a little when moved and I lost one of the ghouls in transit but I'm very happy with how he looks on the tabletop (he is also a beast in game!).

It has been really refreshing to get a whole army finished so quickly, and it has really helped me to learn how to play Age of Sigmar without worrying about how a unit performs/whether it is worth painting or even buying in the first place. My local store runs a lot of events at 1000pts so it will be good to get involved in a few of these without worrying about the "meta" or boring things like that. I have already had some really close games where even the skeletons proved decisive, the rules set seems to allow for most armies to be relatively competitive from what I have seen, and I am excited to try out the new missions with my fully painted army.

It's been too long since I could say that!

It's been a busy couple of months without much hobby time or clear direction for my new Horus Heresy army, but the drought has finally broken and I'm back with a new model to share with you guys! After finally having a game or two using official source books at larger points levels (and with updated Emperor's Children rules), I decided it was time to 'speed' convert a Fulgrim model using an equivalent 40k sized character, an Avatar of Khaine. This gave me a great head start in the proportions and I eventually completed the conversion in one week. I have included some progress pictures below, though I may still change the hands as they are too big!

After one evening's work I was able to remove most of the unwanted parts from the Avatar model, as well as pose the limbs in roughly the right position to match the official model so that even if my conversion wasn't spot on it would still be recognisable on the table. It was at this point I realised the hands were way too large and had to go!

The next few nights were spent building up the armour with the assistance of some brass wire, adding in details and generally avoiding the harder parts like the hands and head. With a goal to finish in under one week I was up early mixing and applying green stuff before work to ensure the next stage was ready to go without clumsy fingers wrecking the previous sculpting. After a lot of image searching it became obvious I would never match all the details on the official model, and I relaxed my goals a little and let the detail work begin with a gaming model in mind rather than display piece.
The head worked relatively well from a rough blob on a piece of cork, modifying the forehead, adding eyes and then working on the hair. This was the first time I used a scalpel for the sharp lines and I was happy with how the hair turned out especially. I also purchased a rounded oil paint putty tool which was great for smoothing out surfaces without leaving sharp edges. At this stage I was already seeing the model coming together and keen to see it finished!
All of the next steps involved a compromise between detail, the conversion timeframe and knowing I am a clumsy gamer who knocks models over a lot! I sculpted the cape flat in the bench before molding it to the rough shape and gluing it to reinforcing brass wire drilled into the model's back. Likewise the leather straps were often glued to the model at another point to prevent them breaking, and the small green stuff balls received a layer of super glue to keep them in place once dried.
These are the photos from the last evening of modding before entering it into a local store's conversion competition. I was resigned to the fact I couldn't finish the hands in time, so did my best to sculpt smaller versions of the Avatar hands until I have a chance to return to the model in future. A beautifully modified and painted Mechanicum conversion from a Necron C'tan model beat me in the competition, so I was able to get the model back early and have a couple of games with him. After three losses without Fulgrim, my Emperor's Children are now undefeated since their Primarch joined them on the field of battle! I look forward to sharing some of my painted models in future, I am still dreaming up new ways to paint purple, so far a blue undercoat looks to be a winner...
With my Emperor's Children slowly growing from Betrayal at Calth box set bits, I turned my attention to building a leader for smaller games while I earn myself enough painting "points" to build some of the more mobile units I have planned for the army. He is made entirely from bits box parts including a random arm which had been stripped of paint and a cape which I first tried two brush blending on. I love the look of the bright red coloured cape against the dark purple on some of my other work in progress models, so he should stand out on the tabletop!
Equipped in the rules with a "sniper rifle" boltgun and "heavy" two-handed duelling blade, I made the best approximations with the bits I had available though the sword is comically large and probably not balanced correctly for a one hand hold. I have kept the armour simple to designate his less pretentious background (using some MkIV running legs as a nod to the heresy era army) though with enough details to work with once painting begins!Matthew Beavishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14625156422882255312noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6124049513546273610.post-80366873695964403842016-01-31T16:43:00.000-08:002016-01-31T16:43:03.468-08:00Betrayal at Calth Contemptor Conversion No.2After the success of modifying my first Betrayal at Calth Contemptor Dreadnought (which I picked up as a solo model before diving into the complete box set), I set about making a more dynamic pose for my second model. With an increase in the number of attacks thanks to the recent FAQ I wanted a model that would be in the thick of the fighting and make the most of the increase to the movement and run ranges using the Emperor's Children special Rite of War. Add in the Fleet USR and I hope he will be making turn two charges every game!
With the model being assembled in two halves off the sprue I had a lot of difficulty building strength with the "hollow" legs and pulled a badly pinned test model apart to fill each of the three sections with green stuff before pinning. This makes him quite weighty once the rocks were added to the base, but with such a dynamic pose it helps quite a lot with the stability once the dice are rolling and clumsy gamers like me are playing!
I found a MkIII backpack on my bits box along with a few non GW legs and heads from an earlier project, so I took a very rough mold so I can use multiple backpacks for basing with in future. After finding the first dreadnought to be a bit of a mess of colour once finished I decided to make this one "simpler" and rely on the large areas of battle damaged purple armour to dominate rather than the ornate gold armour of the earlier model. With a holiday home to Australia for the next few weeks it will be a while until I get to paint this one but it will be worth the wait!Matthew Beavishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14625156422882255312noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6124049513546273610.post-30960100916112754922016-01-26T21:58:00.000-08:002016-01-26T21:58:30.764-08:00Emperor's Children "Champion": Oil WashOne of the key breakthroughs of my new "Emperor's Children" army project has been the use of an oil wash over the whole model after the acrylics to make them more battle-worn without worrying about the usual darkening of a paint scheme that is associated with "dipping". Aside from the terrible smell of white spirits (turpentine) the oil wash has many benefits as it can be manipulated for many hours after applying, does not affect the overall finish of the paint scheme (no shiny residue once dry), and is very cheap when compared to acrylic washes or similar products.

Aside from the terrible photos (which have both had an "auto white balance" applied to them) you can see the effect most noticeably on the cloth sections of the model and the base, both of which gain extra depth and lose some of their glare which detracts from the overall colour scheme. The gold on the left has been shaded only with an acrylic purple wash (after the two gold colours where applied and re-touched), then the whole model coated in GW's Lamium medium before the oils are applied. I used a hair dyer on the first few models to speed things up, but now have a dedicated drying container to keep the smell in and the cat out!Matthew Beavishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14625156422882255312noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6124049513546273610.post-66920972145610087202016-01-13T21:17:00.003-08:002016-01-13T21:17:47.765-08:00Emperor's Children Contemptor Dreadnought (Completed)

The first model I have completed for my new Emperor's Children army is a Mortis pattern Contemptor Dreadnought! I used this Betrayal at Calth model to try out a few new ideas, with some brass wire details, an instant mold copied aquila, and a little freehand detail inspired by some of the Emperor's Children artwork floating around. It was also a great opportunity to see my darker purple colour scheme on a larger model. Overall I am very happy with how it turned out!

I am still getting to grips with my photography (mostly the focus with a phone camera), but the model looks great in person and I can't wait to get him and a few more painted models onto the table for a game later this month. I used an oil wash for the first time, and the brown really ties the base to the model, shading and dulling the metals, while warming up the rather cold colour scheme on base and model alike. I have left the base deliberately sparse but may add the usually grassy patch or two at a later date. I also used a dry pigment to pick out the shadows of the rocks and act as a second brown to compliment the oil paint.

On the sides of the model I added some details using green stuff, parts from the bits box, a little brass wire and freehand. Overall a great start to my army project and I learnt many lessons which I can use on the next Dreadnought!
After a fairly patchy hobby year in 2015 I've decided to keep things fresh and start a new army for Warhammer 30,000 using the recently released Betrayal at Calth box set. I spent the last year or two culling my miniature collections and games down to just two (fairly large) Ork and Blood Angel armies, and it made little sense convincing myself the Calth box set was "good value" if I was only going to use it to add to my Blood Angels. I have always wanted to make an Emperor's Children pre-heresy army after seeing Dave Taylor's work over six years ago (!), and had put off any plans as I was still learning to paint different techniques while finding it difficult to stay focused. As a result my desire to match the "perfection" sought by the Emperor's Children with any paint job would result in a long term project that I felt I would never finish.

So with the New Year comes a new plan to build and paint a full army in a matter of months, and build and paint it specifically for the tabletop. I have been pushing the same models around in the same state of undercoat or partial paint jobs for nearly two years, hoping to one day paint them up "really well" but being distracted by newer models and competition pieces. As a result my enthusiasm for gaming has waned and I want to correct that this year. Having a fully painted army that is painted to a high tabletop standard (and not rushed for a specific deadline) is my number one goal this year, and less than a week in (I cheated with some assembly after Christmas) I am kicking major goals!

One of the keys to this success has been repeating the "tabletop/gaming" army mantra when something doesn't look quite right during assembly. A small gap here, or a slightly less than sharp mold there, would have brought a previous project to a halt but not this time. As a movie director will fix things in post production, I hope to tidy up, mask, and accentuate with a crisp paint job. I will be using all my speed painting skills that I had forgotten, a lot of airbrush, washes, real metals, dusty pigments on the bases (with minimal fancy features) and get back to the roots of painting armies rather than the six step process for painting an eye perfectly. My aim is to loosen up my painting style, relax my eyes and previously rigid hobby schedule to create a beautiful gaming army.Matthew Beavishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14625156422882255312noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6124049513546273610.post-37682446362924309382015-12-20T21:56:00.001-08:002015-12-26T16:12:17.720-08:00Malifaux "Hide and Seek" Crew (Completed)

This evening I put the last brush stroke on a long overdue commission which has taken me almost eight months, including a month or two off as I moved and painted a new apartment, though it has definitely been worth the wait. I'm very happy with how these models turned out, and I look forward to seeing some higher quality pictures taken by the new owner!

The "daydreams" were the first models I painted, and actually had the most trouble with due to their small size and radically different colour schemes! I repainted the model on the right after painting the other two so the contrast matched the box art and the purple colour matched the tiny daydream with the dreamer model below. Having purchased extra fine brass wire for pinning them to the base I hope they will stand up to the rough and tumble of gaming despite their small size.

The tentacled Cthulhu-inspired "Coppelius" stood out on his own in terms of colours, though I managed to match some of his skin tone with the highlights on the other models. I wanted the bright orange of his suit to match his in game speed and provide a visual distraction compared to the duller tones on the Alps below. His handheld eyeball was particularly satisfying to work on! The skin tone on the "dreamer" was a first attempt to lighten a model from bottom to top, rather than just using the same tones on all skin. I'm very happy with how it turned out as this draws the eye to the face rather than legs which I would previously have painted just at bright.

The Alps were suprisingly fast to paint, having mostly darker cloth tones which went well with my current wash/glaze techniques. The box art lighting from the cigar made absolutely no sense with his face lit up but hand showing no 'glow' (you can find the original art here on the wyrd website) but I then struggled to paint in depth with the lighter face tones with a front on light source and no contrast! I also had a lot of "fun" pinning the running model at the correct angle after seeing how silly he looks when positioned facing the ground.

Last on the painting list was "Lord Chompy Bits" himself. After my initial airbrushed base-coat was damaged in the move I decided to repaint the model using brushes and a lot of wet blending and glazes. A lot of patience was required trying to blend on such a big model, and I wanted the model to be lighter and darker from top to bottom. This was achieved using shading washes/glazes and a couple of sessions working on the highlights bottom to top. You can see a little of the reflection from a gloss protection coat which I have dulled down with a matte medium. I was pulling my hair out at one point after a few more spots began to chip from handling. I think sorting out my preparation and painting plinths will be a big goal for the new year!

Update: I've added these models to my coolminiornot page!
There's a lot going on behind the scenes that doesn't make it to the blog and I'd love to share more with my readers without sitting down for a couple of evenings writing up a blog post on a project which may not see the light of day for many months. I also like taking photographs of my games, favourite artwork and works in progress which sometimes aren't quite enough content for a full blog post.
